Nobody told us the deck would become our favorite place to sit for hours. We thought we'd be hiking every day, exploring every trail. And we did — but we kept coming back to those two chairs on the deck, because the wildlife that moves through this little corner of Greer is something you just don't want to miss.
The elk come at dusk, most evenings. They move out of the tree line and into the meadow below the cabin in that unhurried way they have, like they own the place — which, honestly, they do. We've counted as many as a dozen at once, grazing in the fading light while the mountains go pink behind them. Bring binoculars. You'll use them.
Deer are a near-daily presence too, often appearing in the early morning along the meadow edge. They're quieter than the elk, easier to miss if you're not paying attention. But once you start looking, you realize they're always there — a doe and her fawn picking their way through the grass, completely unbothered by the cabin above.
The pond is where things get truly spectacular. A great blue heron has claimed it as his personal fishing spot, and he returns with remarkable regularity — standing motionless at the water's edge for long stretches, then striking with that sudden, precise lunge. We've watched him from the deck with coffee in hand more mornings than we can count.
But the osprey — the osprey will stop you mid-sentence. We were sitting out one afternoon when one appeared overhead, circling in wide, lazy arcs above the pond. Then it folded its wings and dove. Clean entry, barely a splash, and it came up with a trout. We didn't speak for a full minute afterward. Some things just deserve a moment of silence.
The deck at Adorably Rustic isn't just a place to sit — it's a front-row seat to a wildlife show that runs morning to evening. Pull up a chair, pour something warm, and just watch. The White Mountains will take care of the rest.
