First Morning at the Pond

4 min read

The alarm was set for 5:15, but we were already awake. Something about the mountain air — the quiet, the cool, the way the darkness felt alive — made sleep feel like a waste.

We pulled on layers, grabbed our coffee mugs, and walked the short path down to the pond. The grass was wet with dew. The pines stood perfectly still. And then we saw it.

The mist was sitting low on the water, catching the first pale light from the east. The mountains behind were just a silhouette. A great blue heron stood motionless at the far edge, watching.

We didn't speak. There was nothing to say. We just stood there, hands wrapped around warm mugs, watching the world wake up.

By the time the alpenglow hit the peaks — that deep rose gold that only lasts a few minutes — we understood why people come back to Greer year after year. It's not just the cabin, as beautiful as it is. It's this. The stillness. The feeling that you've stepped out of time.

If you stay at Adorably Rustic, set that alarm. Walk down to the pond before sunrise. Bring coffee. Don't bring your phone. Just watch.
